The first presidential debate of 2016, to be held at Wright State University on September 26th  is expected to bring national and international attention to the university. The university and colleges are working on several activities and events leading up to the debate. The College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) will host a series of public panel discussions focusing on topics related to Science and Politics

The COSM panel discussions will be held in Wright State University's Student Union Apollo Room.  Some of the topics are:

  • Outbreaks, Public Health, and Policy
  • Genes, Evolution, and Medicine: Risks and Opportunities
  • Climate Change: Causes, Consequences, and Cures

Each panel will include Wright State faculty and other experts from the wider community.  The format will include presentations along with time for questions from the audience about the topics, not to debate political rhetoric, but to better understand how scientific knowledge adds a unique voice to political discourse to help form public policy

Our goal for hosting the series is to share scientific knowledge of topics important to national and world policy with new audiences using both Wright State University faculty, staff, and students and outside international experts.

Currently, CoSM is working to secure support in the area of media partners, and monetary support from various constituencies to promote the series and to attract community experts as panelists with our faculty. Presently we have received a $500 donation from the Dayton Section of the American Chemical Society. Additional donations are needed in order for us to build diverse panels that will fully explore how scientific knowledge intersects with the collective choices made within our democratic process.

These events are free and open to the public.
