On Friday, September 29, 2017 the College of Science and Mathematics joined Wright State University’s Alumni Relations to recognize outstanding alumni. Among them were Department of Biological Sciences’ alumnus Theodore Hufford, M.D., “08 B.S., “12 M.D. who was awarded the 2017 Graduate of the Last Decade Award.
The Graduate of the Last Decade Award recognizes the accomplishments of Wright State undergraduate alumni who have graduated within the past 10 years. These alumni have quickly excelled in the various aspects of life by demonstrating outstanding accomplishments in their professional careers; impressive volunteer service; and/or noteworthy involvement in professional and service organizations.
Hufford grew up in Piqua, Ohio and quickly adjusted to student life to become involved in several organizations on campus. He was President of Student Government, Student Trustee to the Board of Trustees, Judicial Review Panel chair and was active in multiple activities. Hufford was a University Honors Scholar, and completed his honors research project with Paula Bubulya, Ph.D., Associate Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences.
He Graduated in 2008 with a BS (summa cum laude), and earned his M.D. in 2012 at the Boonshoft School of Medicine where he was President of his class. Hufford was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, and received the Reach Out of Montgomery County Volunteer of the Year Award.
Since graduation, he completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of Illinois-Chicago where he earned acclaim for his leadership, teaching abilities, and dedication to research and patient care. Hufford was recognized with the Senior Educator Award in 2017 and throughout his residency he was named MVP for Compassionate Care multiple times, receiving more personal patient letters than any other resident in the program’s history. In 2016 he was among the top 5 finalist for the Jameson L. Chassin Award for Professionalism from the American College of Surgeons, and received the Resident Excellence Award from the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons in 2017.
Hufford has completed over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, scientific presentations, and posters at local, regional and national surgical meetings. Presently he is completing a Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.
