The College of Science and Mathematics is pleased to announce that Chad Hammerschmidt, PhD, has been appointed Department Chair of Earth and Environmental Sciences on January 1, 2019.

Dr. Hammerschmidt's research is focused on developing a quantitative understanding of the biological, chemical, and physical mechanisms and processes that affect the transport, transformation, and fate of mercury and other trace metals in watersheds, coastal and pelagic marine systems, and the atmosphere. He earned his PhD in Oceanography (chemical) in 2005 from the University of Connecticut. And was a postdoctoral scholar, Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry, at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 2005-2007.

Member of American Chemical Society (ACS), American Geophysical Union (AGU), Association for Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), Society of Environmental of Toxicology & Chemistry (SETAC, associate journal editor).

Hammerschmidt teaches EES 4240/6240 Oceanography, EES 4010/6010 Quality Assurance of Environmental Analysis, EES 4590/6590 Aquatic Geochemistry, EES 4510/6510 Effective Scientific Communication, and EES 4010/6010 Limnology.

In addition to teaching he advises thesis projects of one or so undergraduates, 2-3 M.S. students, and one Ph.D. student at a time.

Hammerschmidt lives with his wife, Katie and two children, Danny and Megan. Katie teaches a variety of aerobic classes and is office manager at the YMCA. Their children are active in basketball, swimming, gymnastics, Xbox gaming, but most importantly their homework. #STEM!
