Interdisciplinary Applied Science and Mathematics Ph.D. Program

Admission

You may be granted admission to the Interdisciplinary Applied Science and Mathematics (IASM) Ph.D. program if the admission requirements set forth by the Wright State University Graduate School and the IASM program are met. You must possess good understanding of mathematics and science fundamentals, including knowledge of differential equations and general physics, when applying to the IASM program. Courses in partial differential equations and intermediate or advanced science courses that align with the focus areas are desirable additions, as well as exposure to a computational software packages or programming languages. Academic records must clearly indicate a potential for success in IASM relevant research. 

Admission Requirements

The minimum admission requirements set forth by the program are as follows:

  • B.S. or B.A. degree from an accredited institution in mathematics, science, or engineering, with a minimum 3.0 grade point average in mathematics and science coursework, demonstrating a strong mathematics background with academic training commensurate with IASM focus areas,

OR

  • M.S. degree from a mathematics or science program, with a minimum 3.25 grade point average in mathematics and science coursework, demonstrating a strong mathematics background with academic training commensurate with IASM focus areas. Previous graduate course credit may be applied toward the degree requirements of the IASM Ph.D. program per the Wright State Graduate School policies and with IASM program approval. With IASM program approval, prior academic and/or research accomplishments may also be applied to selected program milestones.

Additionally, you will be required to submit:

  • Academic Transcripts (undergraduate and graduate)
  • GRE scores (GRE requirement is waived in 2021-2022 academic year)
  • A Statement of Professional Goals. This should include your academic and career preparation and accomplishments, how your experiences have prepared you for a Ph.D. program, your professional/career objectives, and how the IASM program fits your background and goals.  
  • Three letters of recommendation: References should address your past academic and/or research performance and provide an indication of your chances of success in our Ph.D. program.

Providing a CV is recommended but not required.

For international applicants, a score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination, or a minimum score of 79 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), will be required.

A substantial part of the IASM program success and funding will arise from program faculty members’ mentoring and support of Ph.D. students. We strongly encourage you to identify and contact program faculty members in your areas of interest at or before the time of applying to begin the process of identifying a program faculty Ph.D. advisor.
