Senior, Biological Sciences

The pre-health program sparked my interest in Wright State University, and then fantastic scholarship opportunities made my commitment to this university more firm. I was always interested in the math and science since high school, so pursuing a career path in the biological field was not a difficult decision to make.

The most surprising thing about college was how hard it was to manage everything by yourself without your family being there. I think freshman year was definitely a challenge because I had to do everything on my own. There were different experiences that I dealt with every day that I had not considered before college, but my RA and other students living on campus helped me adjust. My advice to the upcoming freshman is that enjoy the college years as best as you can and at the same time learn to adapt to the new environment and accept the responsibilities presented with it; it can seem hard in the beginning but it definitely becomes easier and more rewarding with time.

Some of my favorite courses were General Chemistry with Dr. Pavel (Sizemore) my freshman year, Anatomy and Physiology by Dr. Ritucci and Miska, and Microbiology by Meredith Rodgers. I liked Gen Chem because of Dr. Pavel; the way she taught the class was highly effective and I learned a lot from her. I have always enjoyed Anatomy and Physiology, but with Ritucci and Miska teaching, the course was a blast. The anatomy lab was my favorite, and I actually enjoyed studying for it because it really held my attention.

In my experiences since starting college, I have been able to be a part of many student organizations on campus and take on leadership roles within these orgs. This was a big deal for me because I never had the opportunity to hold a leadership role before, and this gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment. Also, I have been able to volunteer at nearby hospitals, and with so many different hospitals surrounding Wright State it is easy to find a location that is available and appreciative of your volunteer time.
