About

Emily Artz

Senior, BS, Psychology (Behavioral Neuroscience )

The students as well as the faculty here in the College of Science and Mathematics are very interested in education and are willing to actively participate rather than passively experience education.

What led you to Wright State?

I initially attended West Virginia University on a scholarship. After obtaining my Associate's Degree, I went back to my hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Wright State University was the local university most of my friends went to after high school.  I was incredibly impressed at the care the staff and faculty in the College of Science and Mathematics had in bringing students into the college, as well as helping students find their passion in their academic field.

When did you decide you wanted to pursue a career path in science/mathematics?

I wanted to pursue a career in science because I've found it is where my talents and passion lie through my academic and extracurricular experiences.

In what way(s) was your experience different than what you expected?

My experience was different than what I had expected from my other college experiences because the students as well as the faculty here in the College of Science and Mathematics are very interested in education and are willing to actively participate rather than passively experience education.

Do you have any advice for incoming freshman?

My advice to incoming freshman would be to participate and not be afraid to speak with the people in your class, especially your professor!

What is a typical day for you?

My typical day starts with extracurricular activities then my classes. It would be the other way around, but that's just how my classes happened to have been scheduled. I started the Neuroscience Club here on campus, and also work in my EEG research lab on my Honor's Psychology project. Afterwards, I go to class, and then I study and do my homework! Even though I have a busy schedule, I still find time to fit fitness into my schedule and I have time for friends at night or on the weekend. My days are always busy and well-rounded, yet seldom overwhelming. I spend all my time doing things I enjoy so it never seems overwhelming.

What are some of your favorite courses and why?

I love all of my Psychology classes. In particular, Behavioral Neuroscience and Perception are two of my favorite classes mainly because the professors displayed their passion for what they teach. I enjoy other science courses, such as Physics and Human Anatomy and Physiology. My professors' passion is why I like my classes. I am not a big fan of the subject of Physics but my professor is always so upbeat and caring towards the students.

What experiences have you had since starting college that you’d recommend to other students?

I strongly recommend research, because you put your mind through a process that is not necessarily cut and dry. It is a good way to encourage an abstract type of thinking to solve a problem no one has tried before, in a concrete and methodical process. You cannot get that experience through anything else. Volunteering is very important to me, as is participating in student organizations. I emphasize participation, because you can belong to a student organization without participating in one, and you won't get the whole experience out of it unless you participate.

What do you love about Wright State? What is the greatest reward or benefit you’ve received so far?

I love the experience Wright State has given me through both the academic and the extracurricular opportunities. I have had a holistic experience at Wright State because of the opportunity for leadership or success.  Wright State will give you the tools you need to become successful, as well as the support you need to motivate yourself to work towards that success.

What would you tell a high school student or fellow undergraduate interested in pursuing a degree in science or mathematics?

It is hard work, but it is worth it! Just make sure to enjoy it along the way, because the time goes fast!
