Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program

Neuroscience and Physiology Research

The Neuroscience and Physiology area of concentration involves investigating the function of the cell, the organ and the whole animal, using molecular, cellular, physiological and behavioral approaches.

Research and training in neurosciences is intensifying at Wright State University, just as it is in the international scientific community. Our studies have important relevance to advances in areas that include neurodegeneration, activity dependence of synapses, plasticity, and development of the spinal cord.

The scientific environment for neuroscience on campus is further strengthened by the Neuroscience Institute which organizes research and training resources and sponsors scholarly events.

In physiology we have formidable strength in studying function in a wide variety of cell types, including blood cells, skeletal and cardiac myocytes and epithelial cells. A common theme in these studies is a focus on mechanisms in the cell membrane that exchange ions, nutrients and water. Sophisticated cellular and molecular techniques are applied in studies that have important consequences for understanding illnesses such as cystic fibrosis, atherosclerosis, bowel disease and myopathy.

The Neuroscience and Physiology area of concentration covers a broad range of interests from genetic level study to behavioral and theoretical research. Spend a moment to review our faculty’s research programs!
