Thomas D. Reed, Ph.D., '91 M.S. Receives CoSM Outstanding Alumni Award

February 3, 2017 Wright State University recognized outstanding alumni at the 18th annual Outstanding College Alumni Awards (OCAA). These individuals represent some of the best and brightest in their fields and are a tribute to the education they received from Wright State.

Thomas Reed was this year's recipient from the College of Science & Mathematics. Dr. Reed is a molecular geneticist with over 25 years of experience in recombinant DNA technology. He has developed sophisticated transgenic model systems for studying the role of gene products in neuronal, cardiovascular, and cancer systems.

He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in the fields of subcellular modulation, gene regulation and cardiac function and is an inventor on numerous patents. Reed co-founded Intrexon in 1998 and is also the Chief Science Officer.

Before the award ceremony, Dr. Reed met with graduate students to share career strategies. His wife, Dr. Jackie Reed, joined by her husband, later met with students to share their experience in the patent law cycle. They shared tips on navigating discovery (research) through the patent application process.

Reed received his Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics from the University of California-Davis and then completed his Master of Science degree at Wright State University in Biological Science in 1991. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in Molecular and Developmental Biology.
