Dear friends, alumni, faculty and staff,
As the promise of spring begins to unfold, The College of Science and Mathematics is bustling with activities and transitions. We celebrate the career of Joyce Howes, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs as she retired this past February. You can read more about Joyce in this issue. Change can be challenging, but it offers great opportunities for growth.
The college is pleased to announce the appointment of Jacqueline Neal as the new Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. Prior to the appointment, she was the Director of the Pre-Health Program for 8 years, and has called Wright State University home for 21 years as a student, research associate and advisor. This appointment prompted the restructuring of our thriving Pre-Health Program and the welcomed hiring of Amanda Herbe as the new Assistant Director and Harolynn Williams as the new Academic Advisor to the program. Our student success initiatives have been strengthened with the hiring of Dr. Mike O’Neal as Student Success Advisor who will be working with Dr. Ivory Berry on new programs and tools for our students. Both pre-health and student success programs will continue to be managed in the Office of Student Affairs.
January 2nd we celebrated college retirees and a Raider Men’s basketball victory against Detroit. Thanks to Alumni Relations for the use of their Nutter Center box for the event. We look forward to working again with Alumni Relations in the future. On January 23rd we partnered with Tony Ortiz from The Office of Latino Affairs to host Latinos in Science and Mathematics Day. High school students and educators attended programs, met with our faculty, staff and attended tours of our campus, laboratories, student housing and experienced what it was like to be a Raider.
Our recent activities reach beyond our campus to Xian, China and the Bo’Ai International School. On February 21st we welcomed a delegation of 8 students and 3 educators for 10 days of academic and cultural programing. This achievement was possible due to the many campus partners who supported our efforts and shared their expertise with our program organizers and our guests. Our partners have helped us create a model that we will be able to replicate for future projects. There are too many individuals to name in this message, but some of the campus activities our guests enjoyed included University Center for International Education’s transportation assistance, Campus Recreation activities, Stein Air Gallery tour of Brian Chu’s collection, Raj Soin College of Business Trading Room simulation, Department of Chemistry demonstrations, Leap Program testing, laboratory tours with our Dean’s Circle students along with many social events. Thanks to all who contributed to the success of this event.
The College of Science and Mathematics has a tradition of celebrating our students. I hope you take pride in that tradition as you read their stories.
Best Regards,
Yi Li, Ph.D., Dean
