It took me awhile to understand the direction I wanted to take with my life. I studied the humanities, art, and history at another university, but by the end of my studies still felt that I needed to make a change. I wanted to make a stronger impact on the community I was a part of. With this idea, I enrolled at Wright State University to take the prerequisites needed to apply to medical school. I came here because I had heard of the great research opportunities and courses offered.
The wonderful array of diversity and cultures at Wright State is the most eye-opening experience I see every day. This university seems to bring so many different kinds of people together for a common goal of higher education. It is the ability to make friends with people from all over the world that helps enrich the campus life. Don’t be afraid to talk to the person sitting next to you in class; you both are sitting there for the same reason, and you may just make a lifelong friend as well as a study partner.
Anatomy and Physiology was one of my favorite course series so far. It gives you a beautiful picture of the human body, and its teachings can be applied to many of your future classes. It helps you understand the inner-workings that make you, you! Why is your hair a certain color? Why does that boy or girl across the hall make you smile? Why do you remember what your grandmother’s house smells like? This course gives you clues to these questions and so many more that we didn’t even think about asking.
I am very involved with research on campus. I am a member of a team that hopes to use the chemicals found in our breath to detect and monitor different diseases in the human body. Throughout a typical day (which is never really typical at all!), I collect breath samples from volunteers, tinker around in the lab with various kinds of equipment, or do calculations from our collected data. No matter what my day holds, I am always excited to step onto campus and learn something new – it is never dull! I would not be the person I am today without being active on campus; the research that I am a part of at Wright State has taught me to be more confident as a scholar, and the community service I have done has made me more compassionate and well-rounded. Clearly, what I love most about this university is the accessible opportunities it can give its students. There is so much research being conducted here, and it is an amazing experience to work alongside other motivated individuals. Wright State is a wonderful choice for the sciences, and the opportunities here are vast.
