I have grown up around Wright State University because my parents are graduates from here and my mom volunteered at the summer camps, so it was a natural choice for me to study at Wright State; I have always loved it here. I became fascinated with biology (especially the human body) in my sophomore year of high school because I enjoyed knowing how the world around me worked. Ultimately I would like to pursue a career in the optometry field after I complete my undergraduate degree.
Coming to campus, I was surprised how easy it was to get involved and meet new people. I lived in the dorms, and there were so many activities to try. Over my time here, I have been involved in three student organizations pretty regularly, and have taken a leadership role in all of them, which has taught me responsibility. Most importantly, these organizations have given me close friendships and experiences that I will take with me through the rest of my life.
It is so easy to become a part of research life here at Wright State. In many other large universities, it is almost impossible to do complex research in your undergrad, but here there are many ways to get plugged in. I was given an honors biology research project all my own, and I receive a sense of accomplishment while performing my experiments.
Science and mathematics degrees are great choices to pick with promising careers in these fields. The world needs more people that are passionate about science. Find others around you who are pursuing the same degree; they can be the biggest help and motivating boost when coursework gets tough. Also, do not be afraid to ask the professors or tutors for assistance because they are here to help you achieve your goals and their one-one-one attention can be immensely beneficial. Always remember to not let the rough days discourage you from following your dreams, but better yet use them as a benchmark to see how far you’ve come.
