For undergraduate students, we provide a variety of programs in physics preparing them for either graduate school or for careers. Graduate students can choose either a Master's of Science (Physics) or a Master's in Teaching (Physics), or an interdisciplinary Ph.D. (Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering).

Why Physics?

The Physics Department leads the college, the university, and the country in a variety of measures. For instance:

  • Three graduate students have received national SMART fellowships from 2009-11 to pursue a Ph.D. degree, your four national fellows (an American Geophysical Union fellow, two American Physical Society fellows, an IEEE fellow) is unmatched at Wright State and, per >> faculty, is above some of the largest doctoral programs such as Kansas State University, the department has the only endowed chair position in the college
  • Our four female faculty, per faculty, is above the national average of women faculty in physics departments,the external research funding received by physics faculty over the 2006-11 is tops in the college, averaging over $2.5M a year
  • Over 25% of the faculty serve on editorial boards of international journals
  • The first ever International Conference on Zinc Oxide was organized at Wright State. Zinc oxide is the next generation optical material, with applications ranging from suncreams to DVD lasers
